Story about mutated vegatation on shipwrecked island
Dec 1 2007, 12:37 PM EST Do you know this story? guy goes on island that ship filled with chemicals crashed into. chemicals leach into island. over time cause island vegetation to mutate. Mutated vegetation's lifecycle no longer reproduction-based. hence life of the individual becomes life of species. plants grow HUGE. This was a really cool story, I'd like to read it again. I don't know who wrote it or what issue of Omni it was in, do you? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Story about mutated vegatation on shipwrecked island
Dec 3 2007, 11:18 PM EST Could this be it? If so, it was published February 1991. Ballard, J.G.--DREAM CARGOES A lowly seaman takes charge of an abandoned toxic waste ship and makes his way to a garbage island, where he meets and becomes lovers with a biologist. She's studying the new growths seeded and nurtured by the dumped wastes. He's evolving into something other than human from his exposure aboard the ship. Great classic Ballard. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Story about mutated vegatation on shipwrecked island
Mar 6 2008, 8:45 PM EST Trula, the story you are asking about I do not remember, I wish I could help. I myself am searching for a story that appeared in Omni magazine in the eighties ( I think). It involved a retired aerospace engineer who dabbled with cars and for some reason decided to make a school bus faster by installing an old town clock spring and wrapping it around the driveshaft backing the bus up to wind it up then “springing” it on unsuspecting Corvettes on the freeway. Later in the story he mounts a custom set of light on a exotic sports car having them set up to reproduce a holographic image of his school bus, so that the bus would always remain in front of the car regardless of the drivers attempts to overtake the bus. I think the story may have been called “Big Spring” but so far all searches have been futile. Can you help? Do you find this valuable? |
