Watching the Olympics reminded me of a great story from Omni, circa 80 or 81, I think. It was about a future Olympics where genetic engineering was endemic, but couldn’t be proved. The big rivalry was, of course, between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Two coaches from each country talked at one point about the suspicious players - one swimmer actually had fins, but it was said to be a rare birth defect. That was the sort of weird things contemplated in this story. The conclusion involved a boxing match where the U.S. fighter was landing plenty of punches, but the Soviet boxer stayed on his feet and eventually knocked out the U.S. player. The coaches talked after the match and the concluding lines to the story were something like the U.S. coach saying to the Soviet coach “Its like your man didn’t have any brains to rattle around”. And the Soviet coach replies “He doesn’t - at least not in his head.”
So many great stories were in the first five years or so of Omni when I read it as a teenager. I’ve never looked at the Omni sci fi anthology books - did they collect stories from the magazine, or was it just a compilation sponsored by Omni?

One of th reasons I turned to publishing was because of OMNI. I would love to bring this magazine back to life, but I doubt it would work.

So I was wondering what Omni magazine in 2008 would be like. I imagine it would be very different from the original. But would it be better or worse? Times sure have changed since then. I miss Omni. Would anyone like to share what they think it might be like, what they would like to see, and what they would not like to see it be like? Maybe one day someone will have the courage to start it up again. Does anyone read any other magazines or know of websites with similar material that Omni fans might be interested in? Regards, Jason

I've been trying to remember a story I read in Omni about, well, let's say around 20 years ago now....
As I remember, it revolved around a rock star who was known for his flashy theatrics, and how he started changing once he started incorporating cybernetic enhancements into his body. A fairly early description of cyberpsychosis (for all the CP2020 fans out there.....) I know it was printed in the late 70's/early 80's (no later than 1983). Sound familiar to anyone out there??

That was the title of a short story in a long-lost issue of Omni. The title has reverberated in my mind ever since, although I've long forgotten the author's name or even what the story is about . Can anyone offer info on either?

I was an avid reader of Omni in the 80's, and only have 1 or 2 old magazines and I'm searching for aparticular piece of art in a particular edition.
The piece of art depicts a pale pink desert in the foreground with a human head (transparent) emerging from the sand with a galaxy in the place of the brain. It's a lovely piece of art work and I'd like a digital copy, but I don't know which edition it appeared in or who the artist was. I remember it was not on the cover. How would I go about this ? Not all libraries in Australia carry old editions of magazines.

I am sooo out of the loop. My dad just gave me about 40 mags. so I have been going through all of them. If anyone has the picture please let me know. Thanks, Barb

My first issue of OMNI magazine was purchased at a newsstand when I was a freshman in high school. It was the May 1979 issue. I was immediately hooked. I think I bought the next couple of issues at the newsstand and then I got a subscription.
I also ordered the first six issues from the back issues ordering page. I remember how impatient I was waiting for those back issues to arrive. I finally got so tired of waiting that I sent a letter to the magazine asking them where my back issues were. A week or so later I got my back issues. Then a couple more weeks after that, I got another package containing another set of the six back issues. I thought I was pretty hot stuff having two copies of the first six issues of this awesome magazine! I sold off one set of those first six issues on eBay a few years ago (thinking that they should be worth a bunch of money) but I still have the other set and the plain brown wrapper that they came in (with a return address of OMNI, Penthouse, and Forum on it)!! I kept my subscription up for about three years (ending around 1982) and then started another subscription around 1987 and kept that subscription until the magazine ended in 1995. I kept every issue of the magazine and in the last couple of years have been filling in the holes in the collection on eBay. I now only need about 9 issues to complete my collection now! |

The guy was called Günter Dörner and I think the article was entitled 'Homosexuals are born, not made, claims one physician who says he has proof positive that sexual orientation is sealed in the womb' - I've been trying to find this article for a while too but I've not had any luck yet. Email me if you find it anywhere!

Do you know this story? guy goes on island that ship filled with chemicals crashed into. chemicals leach into island. over time cause island vegetation to mutate.
Mutated vegetation's lifecycle no longer reproduction-based. hence life of the individual becomes life of species. plants grow HUGE. This was a really cool story, I'd like to read it again. I don't know who wrote it or what issue of Omni it was in, do you?

Sometime in the 1980s, when I was subscribing to Omni magazine, I read an interview with a person who mentioned that the patent for a 200 mpg carburetor was suppressed by the oil industry. I can't find the magazine it was in and am hoping that someone in this forum will remember the article and help me identify which issue it was in, so that I can work on getting a copy of it. I'm guessing that there might be folks here who have all of the magazines and who might be able to browse through to find which one it is...
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this. rsmyth |

I was listening to a lecture given by Drunvalo Melchizedek on google video. He was talking about these kids in China who could to basically anything that they could think of, walk through walls etc. He goes on to say that there are increasing amounts of these types of children around the world & that the Chinese, Russians & Mexicans have 'schools' for these children. He says that Omni magazine has an article on this in the January edition of 1985. Can anyone confirm this for me? He also says Nature journal have done a story on these children as well.

Sometime around '91-'94 Omni had a couple of short horror stories in the 'BEST OF.' The one I remember most was about some sadistic captors how held prisonors (with the hint of a Nazi camp theme) and there was a 'contest' where the 'chefs' had to de-bone the victims while keeping them alive the longes. It was a chilling but well written story. Also in the same issue and article were short stories called 'The Burberry' (about a coat that had a 'monster' in the pocket, and another called, I think, "Tiger by the Tale" any help locating them would be great!

I am searching for a particular eition of Omni which contains a certain piece of unique art.

It's a lovely piece of art work and I'd like a digital copy, but I don't know which edition it appeared in or who the artist was. I think it may have been in the 1980 series, because that's when i wa reading it prolifically - does any one know of it ? Can anyone help me find the issue / And the art ? I am willing to pay for a good copy, and perhaps even buy other editions - I am in Australia, with Paypal set up ready to go. I hope someone out there knows something ? Cheers Chris

Came across this site whilst I was trying to hunt down any and every issue of the much lauded, but now lamented Omni magazine.
I don’t think I’ve ever been so captivated or absorbed by a periodical before or since. It just seemed to touch a nerve; the perfect mix of science fact, fiction, fantasy and future forecasts; (not to mention the ground breaking artwork). It deserves the adulation and nostalgic mystique it still inspires today. I actually owned every issue of Omni, (Oct ’78 to fall ’95) and in all that time they were kept in pristine condition. Stacked and packed carefully in the attic as I had to relocate for a year, imagine my disdain when I found out my brother had organised a house clearance (my parents had decided to run away from home) in my absence blissfully. unaware of the crime he was perpetrating. So now after all these years I’m on what you may call a bit of a quest; I'm currently engaged in bidding on ebay for every issue available and so far have secured 76 which is woefully short of the 200 plus that went into circulation. Therefore I am asking all you omni afficianados out there if tou can help me fill in the gaps. Listed below are the dates of the issues I still require and I would be willing to purchase if you are willing to part with them. All responses would be given every attention and all sellers would be answered. Donations would not be refused. In these instances I would pay for postage and make a reciprocal payment to a charity of your choice 1979 Feb, Apr & Jul; 1980 Aug; 1981 Feb, Mar Oct, Nov; 1982 Jan, May, Jul, Sep Oct, Nov, Dec; 1983 Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov.
