I have 144 issues of Omni and would part with them for 4.50 each.I can send a file with a picture of each one. Most are in excellent condition. If you are interested contact me at hywystr@aol.com. You would have to pay shipping.

I have the first issue of OMNI plus a stack of others. I always wondered if they were worth anything more than sentimental artifacts. I remember I would read them from cover to cover every word, they were a nice step up from comics for my thirsty brain.

Many of the questions on this list are about specific articles or stories in Omni that folks are looking for. So I had an idea to put the table of contents on-line. Besides being an e-mail list, the Omnishrine at Wetpaint IS a Wiki, so I put a few pages up and copied over the table of contents for the first issue that I typed up. I also dropped a note to Inkblurt to apologize for not touching base with him (him? her?) first. :)
I found a library near me that has the full run of Omni in print (and, wow - does that bring back memories - I could lose myself browsing through those early issues). I copied the first years' table of contents and typed up the October 78 TOC and put it on the Wiki. If other want to help by typing up specific issues, that would be great and is what a Wiki is all about. I know others have talked about scanning in entire issues and, I guess, putting them on-line. Like folks said, that would be a LOT of work. Plus, distributing scanned copies would violate copyright law. But I think we're safe with just the table of contents ("fair use", etc.) I know there's a fiction index for Omni stories: http://zzmaster.best.vwh.net/SF/omni_index.html but just spot-checking stories from the first three issues, I found a few discrepancies and one story left out of the index. So I think this table of content collaborative project could be useful. I'm not sure if the Omnishrine Wiki is the easiest set of tools, but for the time being, its probably OK. Anyone else want to help? It took me about five minutes to type in this one table of contents (I did in as a four column table in Wordperfect, and the the table copied over perfectly), so I might add a few others, but anyone should feel free to dive in and contribute. Eventually we could hot-link some entries and, i guess, make them searchable. I don't know enough about web programming, but those are possibilities, as far as I know. |

I was an avid reader of Omni in the 80's, and only have 1 or 2 old magazines and I'm searching for aparticular piece of art in a particular edition.
The piece of art depicts a pale pink desert in the foreground with a human head (transparent) emerging from the sand with a galaxy in the place of the brain. It's a lovely piece of art work and I'd like a digital copy, but I don't know which edition it appeared in or who the artist was. I remember it was not on the cover. How would I go about this ? Not all libraries in Australia carry old editions of magazines.

Watching the Olympics reminded me of a great story from Omni, circa 80 or 81, I think. It was about a future Olympics where genetic engineering was endemic, but couldn’t be proved. The big rivalry was, of course, between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Two coaches from each country talked at one point about the suspicious players - one swimmer actually had fins, but it was said to be a rare birth defect. That was the sort of weird things contemplated in this story. The conclusion involved a boxing match where the U.S. fighter was landing plenty of punches, but the Soviet boxer stayed on his feet and eventually knocked out the U.S. player. The coaches talked after the match and the concluding lines to the story were something like the U.S. coach saying to the Soviet coach “Its like your man didn’t have any brains to rattle around”. And the Soviet coach replies “He doesn’t - at least not in his head.”
So many great stories were in the first five years or so of Omni when I read it as a teenager. I’ve never looked at the Omni sci fi anthology books - did they collect stories from the magazine, or was it just a compilation sponsored by Omni?

One of th reasons I turned to publishing was because of OMNI. I would love to bring this magazine back to life, but I doubt it would work.

My first issue of OMNI magazine was purchased at a newsstand when I was a freshman in high school. It was the May 1979 issue. I was immediately hooked. I think I bought the next couple of issues at the newsstand and then I got a subscription.
I also ordered the first six issues from the back issues ordering page. I remember how impatient I was waiting for those back issues to arrive. I finally got so tired of waiting that I sent a letter to the magazine asking them where my back issues were. A week or so later I got my back issues. Then a couple more weeks after that, I got another package containing another set of the six back issues. I thought I was pretty hot stuff having two copies of the first six issues of this awesome magazine! I sold off one set of those first six issues on eBay a few years ago (thinking that they should be worth a bunch of money) but I still have the other set and the plain brown wrapper that they came in (with a return address of OMNI, Penthouse, and Forum on it)!! I kept my subscription up for about three years (ending around 1982) and then started another subscription around 1987 and kept that subscription until the magazine ended in 1995. I kept every issue of the magazine and in the last couple of years have been filling in the holes in the collection on eBay. I now only need about 9 issues to complete my collection now! |

I am searching for a particular eition of Omni which contains a certain piece of unique art.
The piece of art depicts a pale pink desert in the foreground with a human head (transparent) emerging from the sand with a galaxy in the place of the brain. It's a lovely piece of art work and I'd like a digital copy, but I don't know which edition it appeared in or who the artist was. I think it may have been in the 1980 series, because that's when i wa reading it prolifically - does any one know of it ? Can anyone help me find the issue / And the art ? I am willing to pay for a good copy, and perhaps even buy other editions - I am in Australia, with Paypal set up ready to go. I hope someone out there knows something ? Cheers Chris

As is the case with many others I miss Omni too - I bought the magazien every month at secondary school - introduced me to Scott-Card and Mandelbrot - great pictures in one edition of fractal images that introcued me to chaos.
I guess that Omni could not exist these days - bit eclectic!! |

way back when, you could pick up several fine science magazines at your local news stand. because of the availability of all this information, i was able to contribute to conversations, understand what others were talking about, and generally be an informed individual. they were generally written in layman terms but not so as to make you feel that you were reading SCIENCE FOR DUMMIES. i really miss the leg up these publications gave me....and i felt that iwas ,at least trying to be informed.
