Howdy, I wrote for OMNI from l980 until its last gasp ( the web-only edition where I also hosted a web interview chat with scientists and authors). It was a great magazine and I'm convinced would have been more popular than ever if it hadn' t been closed down after the publisher's death. I know some former OMNI writers are doing some work for Discover now ( moi included). Nice to see this OMNI shrine!

I'm looking for an insert, I remember it feeling like thick construction paper, inside an omni magazine. From looking on the internet I beleive it was from 1987, but am unsure. I'd love to be able to find this text again or get a scan copy of it from someone's collection.

I read an article in the Omni magazine between 1990-1992 (i think), about a murder of an art dealer in New York. Apparently the only thing that was stolen was a ring from the art dealer's store. It was reportedly Vlad Tepish's family ring, and that it now probably graces the finger of a Columbian drug lord. Vlad was a Wallachian Prince, whom Dracula is based on. I would like to track down that article and reread it. I believe it was non fiction. Anyone with any recollection of this, please drop me a line.

I'm looking for an old Omni-published story by Issac Asimov where the two characters could stop time for as long as they're touching each other. I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone could give me on finding a title, issue number, etc so I can locate it for a friend as a holiday gift - thanks in advance!

I'm looking for a story that was in Omni, sometime, I think, in the early 80's or very late 70's. It was about some antlike creatures that could be kept in colonies and would make war on each other and carve images of their owner on their nests. They were treated cruelly by their owner, and got the better of him. That's all I remember about the story, but I would love to find a copy of it for my son.

I was listening to a lecture given by Drunvalo Melchizedek on google video. He was talking about these kids in China who could to basically anything that they could think of, walk through walls etc. He goes on to say that there are increasing amounts of these types of children around the world & that the Chinese, Russians & Mexicans have 'schools' for these children. He says that Omni magazine has an article on this in the January edition of 1985. Can anyone confirm this for me? He also says Nature journal have done a story on these children as well.

Omni once ran an article about a case where a scientist timed some lab rats that learned to run a maze. He repeated the experiment in Europe later with identical rats and found that they ran the same maze at a speed more in line with the original rats' increased 'learned' speed. Omni offered a reward for anyone that could provide more evidence that there may be a 'link' between individuals or groups of similar creatures that transcends direct communication. Anyone remember this? It has always intrigued me.

Does any one remember the Humor Quiz in the Last Word section of an issue back in 1983 or possibly 1984? It was absolutely side-splitting and I wish I knew what happened to my copy.

| crecon | Ashfall Fossil Beds - Was it published? | 0 | Mar 28 2007, 5:08 PM EDT by crecon | ||||

I sold an article to Omni on the Ashfall Fossil Beds in northeast Nebraska. They paid me handsomely for the article, and it was scheduled to be published in a forthcoming issue, but they didn't indicate which one. I would like to know if it was ever published as I never received a copy of the issue it may have appeared in.
This was some time in the '80s but I can't be more specific. Does anyone know if there is a complete Table of Contents of all issues posted somewhere? Thanks in advance for any help on this. |

| afinnang | paraplegic dreamers | 2 | Feb 26 2007, 3:30 AM EST by afinnang | ||||

I once read a very brief mention in Omni of a study of the dreams of paraplegic people. Now, my recollection of this is very vague in most respects. I don't remember who did the study, where it was done, or even if dreams were the main subject or just one among many questions. But what made a great impression on me, and so has stuck in my memory ever since, was that the great majority of them walked and ran and danced in their dreams - even in their nightmares. These weren't dreams ABOUT walking or running or regaining the use of their bodies - they just dreamt themselves as non-paraplegics, as a matter of course. There was a comment to the effect that it took decades before the actual state of their bodies fully penetrated their mind or brain or wherever the identity lives. That's the part of this article I took to heart, and I have thought of this oddball little snippet of a fact many times since.
Recently, I met a doctor who is studying "phantom pains" - the pain that amputees feel in their no-longer-present limbs. It reminded me of the paraplegics dancing in their dreams, and I mentioned it to him. He became very intrigued, and wanted to know more about it. But I don't know any more than what I've described in this comment. I've tried to google with inventive&creative search-words, but no luck. Remember Omni had a small column where they reported little things like this? For some reason I think it was red. Short notices on strange research and odd events. My best guess is that I read this notice some time in the early 80s, but I'm far from sure. OK, if any of you have that issue and can quote me the details, or remember any details, I will be thrilled. The odds are astronomical, I realize, but that just makes the project more interesting. And what this doctor is aiming for, is a greater understanding of human identity, and the ways it is - or is not - connected to the body. Important and fascinating. And perhaps helped along by one of you out there?

I read in Omni about a guy who was making custom chairs based on the data collected on the neutral posture assumed by sleeping astronauts.
He also offered to create a set of plans based on measurements you sent to him. Does anyone remember this article? If so, could you please post a copy of it, or provide contact information, on the chance this guy is still around and doing business. |
